Leros

Year of establishment: 2002

KOISPE TOPSY DODECANISOU, based in Leros, is a mental health unit dedicated to the social and vocational rehabilitation of individuals with psychosocial problems. It was founded in 2002 and represents the culmination of the Psychiatric Reform that initially took place in Leros and was subsequently expanded to psychiatric hospitals throughout Greece. At the outset of this journey, the primary focus of Greece’s first Social Cooperative was to overcome the institutionalized practices that undermined human dignity and to combat institutionalization and social exclusion. Today, building on this long-standing experience and assessing the needs of the times, KOISPE operates with the goals of creating quality jobs for people with mental health issues, and preventing and countering institutionalization through innovative, people-centered activities. Beekeeping, the cultivation of aromatic medicinal plants, the production of Mediterranean cuisine and folk art items, and finally the Caserma herb farm—which is open to visitors—are the “therapeutic tools” for achieving these goals.
