Andros

Year of establishment: 2009

The Center for Contemporary Research & Action on Andros (Andros Research Center – EKA) was founded in 2009 and is based in Andros, with the aim of translating research into practical actions for the preservation and promotion of the island’s natural and cultural heritage, with tangible benefits for the local community.

Its main and ongoing project is Andros Routes (2010–present): the documentation, maintenance, signage, and promotion of a 240-km network of traditional trails. The 100-km Andros Route has been certified as a “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” by the European Ramblers Association (2015, 2018, 2022), establishing Andros as an internationally recognized hiking destination.

At the same time, EKA develops initiatives focused on intangible cultural heritage (Andros Oral History Group), agri-food traditions, the conservation of natural resources with an emphasis on water and springs, environmental awareness (e.g. “Clean Green Andros”), as well as educational and cultural initiatives that connect the younger generation with the landscape and local knowledge.

With a focus on volunteerism, participation, and collaboration, EKA works toward a sustainable, resilient, and socially active Andros.
