Leros
Year of establishment: 1977
The Artemis Center for Culture, Research, and Development in Leros has been operating since 1977 with the aim of engaging citizens in folk culture, the arts, research, architecture, education, and environmental protection, as well as promoting Leros internationally. Over the decades of its operation, it has hosted hundreds of cultural and educational initiatives and has collaborated with organizations, universities, museums, and communities across all continents.
In recent years, it has focused primarily on school-age youth, with more than 350 students participating weekly in classes in traditional dance, music, singing, painting, iconography, chess, and folklore research. Since 2001, over 1,000 children have traveled abroad as part of organized cultural activities. The contemporary pedagogical approach of dance instructor Zacharoula Hatzikonstantinou has received special recognition and was also featured in an educational program of the Cyprus Ministry of Education. At the same time, she has been organizing a traditional music festival for young people for 18 years and conducts humanities seminars in collaboration with Columbia University.
