Paros
Year of establishment: 1995
The care of wild animals in Greece began in the late 1980s and quickly gained momentum, leading to the development of similar initiatives in several regions of the country.
In early 1995, the founding members of Alkyoni, who by then had already accumulated several years of experience as permanent volunteers with EKPAZ, decided to establish a new wildlife hospital, based in Paros.
The idea was simple. Instead of a single, massive central clinic, we would have several scattered throughout the country, enabling immediate response to emergencies and better care for the animals in our care.
ALKYONI’s operations over the past thirty-one years have been marked by consistency and success. In 1996, a temporary operating license was issued for ALKYONI by the Ministry of Rural Development, and in 2004, a permanent operating license was granted by the same Ministry.
The clinic’s original location—a private garden and building belonging to one of the founding members—quickly proved too small to meet growing needs.
The Holy Monastery of Loggovarda on Paros responded positively to the search for a new location, granting a plot of land measuring thirteen acres for a nominal rent, where work on the permanent facilities of ALKYONI began in February 1997.
The assistance provided in the years that followed by young volunteers from all over the world, as well as from Parian craftsmen who volunteered their labor, was truly inspiring, and the result of this tremendous volunteer effort was the completion of the building facilities and the landscaped outdoor areas within five years.
