Accessibility in the South Aegean: Thematic Research by the Social Inclusion Observatory

Inaugurating a new form of research, the South Aegean Social Inclusion Observatory has completed and published a thematic study on Accessibility. This study analyzes the critical issue of accessibility, simultaneously exploring its relationship with sustainable development and integration into active social life. The aim of the research is to capture the current situation, document best practices, and highlight the challenges and opportunities for improving living conditions on the islands of the respective Region.

Through a mixed methodology, which included desk data analysis and interviews with municipalities, public authorities, civil society organizations, and beneficiaries of disability transportation cards, the research aimed to gather comprehensive and well-documented information on the state of accessibility.

The findings highlight the need to strengthen infrastructure, improve coordination and the implementation of accessibility plans, as well as to raise social awareness. These interventions are deemed essential to ensure the equal participation of all in the social and economic life of the islands. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the importance of collaboration between local authorities, the private sector, and civil society in order to develop sustainable solutions that will guarantee an inclusive environment for all citizens and visitors of the region.

In the coming years, three more horizontal thematic studies will follow, each focusing on crucial and significant issues in the South Aegean.

The Observatory also conducts the Annual Regional Income and Living Conditions Survey, as well as the On-Site Research with the Participation of the Municipalities of the South Aegean.
