The Regional Observatory of Social Inclusion began its fifth year of on-site research in the South Aegean, focusing this year on youth and mental health. On June 6, 2025, it visited Ios and conducted interviews with the Mayor, Mr. Gikas and the CSC employee, Ms. Karra. Earlier held an online discussion with the President of the Save Ios association, Mr. Vagianos.
Mr. Gikas emphasized that unemployment on the island is nonexistent during the summer, while in winter there are employment opportunities. However, the lack of housing is a major obstacle for young people. He also mentioned the need to protect natural resources and presented projects such as small dams and the upgrading of sewage infrastructure.
Ms. Karra highlighted the need to staff the social services with specialists, as the current employees are insufficient to meet the psychosocial needs. She also emphasized the migration of young people during the winter and the increase in mental health cases.
Mr. Vagianos presented the activities of the Save Ios association, which aims for sustainable development and the protection of the island’s natural and cultural heritage through cultural and legal interventions.
The Observatory thanks the Municipality of Ios for their cooperation and contribution to the research, as well as all the participants.
