As part of its ongoing on-site research, the Social Inclusion Observatory visited the Municipality of Mykonos. Specifically, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, it conducted interviews with the Head of the Ombrodectis Nursery, Ms. Kalliopi Gelou, as well as with the officials of the Municipality’s Welfare Office, Mr. Dimitrios Margaras and Ms. Anastasia Oikonomou.
Ms. Gelou spoke about the operation of the Nursery, emphasizing that their goal is the children’s safety in daily life, as well as their mental and social development. Additionally, she mentioned the activities of the facility and their future plans. As highlighted, their main concern is the creation of a special school where all children will have a place in society without being stigmatized.
Mr. Margaras and Ms. Oikonomou spoke about the progress made in recent years on social issues, such as the approval for the establishment of a Community Center. They also highlighted that the majority of young people are employed in tourism activities and service provision. However, they emphasized the lack of post-secondary education opportunities as well as creative activities for children and youth. Regarding mental health, there is a general trend toward stabilization of related cases.
