For the fourth consecutive year, the South Aegean Social Inclusion Observatory conducted on-site research across the islands of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The aim was to analyze the living conditions of residents as well as the social policies implemented by the municipalities of the respective Region, with a focus on initiatives that promote social inclusion and cohesion at the local level.
The on-site research was carried out from July to October 2024, with the active participation of 18 municipalities in the South Aegean Region. Once again, the research recorded the needs and priorities of island residents. This year’s field visits by the Observatory focused on specific thematic areas such as accessibility, the elderly, youth delinquency, and gender-based violence—issues identified through consultations with all the region’s Social Welfare Centers and municipalities. At the same time, the research highlights critical issues for improving citizens’ quality of life, with particular emphasis on the need to strengthen healthcare services, support employment, and enhance infrastructure and transportation.
Drawing on the experience and knowledge gained through the implementation of previous consecutive On-Site Research initiatives, and based on the findings from the conducted interviews, the Observatory puts forward specific proposals aimed at improving the standard of living for both residents and visitors of the Region.
These proposals focus on improving the provision of healthcare services, strengthening the local economy through employment and training programs, and creating activity spaces for children, youth, and the elderly. Additionally, enhancing transportation infrastructure and accessibility is expected to improve citizens’ daily lives and contribute to building a more inclusive society. Equally important is the development of psychological and social support programs for vulnerable groups, while raising public awareness of their rights remains a central priority of the study.
The aforementioned proposals outline a pathway toward a more cohesive and prosperous society across the islands of the South Aegean, aiming for the continuous improvement of living conditions and the strengthening of social cohesion.

It is noteworthy that the findings from the On-Site Research feed into the Social Profile of the Municipalities in the South Aegean, a digital tool developed by the Observatory for the qualitative representation of local parameters and its contribution to decision-making.
