Visit of the Social Inclusion Observatory to the Municipality of Paros

The Social Inclusion Observatory, as it does every year, visited the Municipality of Paros. On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, interviews were conducted with the Deputy Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Protection of the Municipality, Ms. Loukia Malamateniou; the head of the nursery school “Ta Melissakia,” Ms. Irini Rangousi; the staff of the Community Center, Ms. Ioanna Papanikolaou and Ms. Sofianna Chatzopoulou; as well as with a founding member of the Association of Families with Three Children, Ms. Maggy Armaou.

During the interview at the nursery school, the discussion focused on its operational model and main objectives. It was noted that the structure could be improved by hiring additional staff and renovating the outdoor area. Furthermore, an increase in the number of children with learning difficulties was highlighted—an issue that may be partly attributed to the lack of quality time spent with family.

From their side, the staff of the Community Center mentioned the large volume of tasks they have undertaken, which—due to lack of time—prevents each of them from focusing on their specific area of expertise. It was highlighted that, on the one hand, young people are mostly engaged in tourism-related activities, while on the other hand, the island is facing over-tourism, resulting in a gradual loss of its identity. However, various associations operate on the island, and through their initiatives, they contribute to the creative engagement of young people and others in the community. Regarding mental health, although there is a noticeable increase in needs, there is a shortage of both dedicated facilities and specialized personnel.

The Association of Families with Three Children spoke about its work and how it operates, emphasizing that its main drawback is the lack of its own dedicated space. Additionally, the association’s goal is to generally support families with children, and mention was made of its efforts to secure discounts or better prices on products.

Finally, the Observatory would like to thank the Municipality of Paros for its cooperation and contribution to the research, as well as all the participants.
