The Social Inclusion Observatory continues its field research across the Municipalities of the South Aegean for the 6th consecutive year. This year, the primary objective of the research is to transition from simply mapping social needs to a more complex investigation of local variations, changes, common trends, and the potential for collaborative approaches to social challenges.
As part of the field research conducted in numerous Municipalities of the South Aegean Region, the field study in the Municipality of the Heroic Island of Kasos took place on Monday, 27/07/2026.
Researcher Ms. Dimitra Tasiopoulou interviewed Mr. Ioannis Nikolaou, Deputy Mayor of Administrative Services and Civil Protection.
Mr. Nikolaou pointed out the absence of extreme poverty phenomena on the island, while highlighting the importance of a personalized approach to social protection, especially within small local communities.
As he mentioned, a significant number of elderly citizens face phenomena of social isolation, abandonment, and loneliness, while there are also households dealing with severe financial difficulties. In closing, he noted that one of the major problems the island faces concerns the difficulty of finding available housing for people relocating to Kasos to staff essential services, such as schools, the medical center, as well as the Municipality’s own services.
Additionally, an interview was conducted with the President of the Beautification and Cultural Association of Agia Marina, Kasos, Ms. Evangelia Aspra. During the interview, the Association’s work and actions, the challenges it currently faces, and the social impact of its activities on the local community were recorded.
